Michael H. Barnes, born August 8, 1937, died on January 30, 2026, at the age of 88 at Hospice of Dayton. Mike was born to Horace C. Barnes and Corlin (Wethern) Barnes in Grand Rapids, MN. 

Mike spent his formative years in Bovey, MN and graduated in 1955 from Greenway High School. He went on to earn degrees in Philosophy and Theology from St. Louis University in 1961, later completing his doctorate at Marquette University. Mike dedicated five decades to the University of Dayton, serving as a professor in the Department of Religious Studies and the Honors Program. His passion for teaching inspired generations of students, and his commitment to education was recognized in 1992 with the University of Dayton and Alumni Association’s awards for excellence in teaching. As the author of four books, Mike’s intellectual legacy continues to enrich students and scholars.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister Pat (Rick Decoster), nieces Shelly Cornell, Paula (Jeff Troumbly), Angie (Derek Vekich), Sherry Imbrogna, nephews Dan (Rhaya) Anderson and Ken (Sarah) Decoster, 14 grandnieces and nephews, and 5 great-grandnephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barb (Barnes) Anderson, and his dear friend Ann Heller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Dayton, honoring Mike’s memory and the compassionate care he received.

Mike’s wisdom, kindness, and dedication will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
