Mary Helen Veda, a remarkable woman whose warmth and dedication touched the lives of many, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in Kettering, Ohio. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on May 6, 1936, she lived a life rich in love, community service, and family. Mary dedicated her career to the betterment of education as the Past President of the Parent Teacher Association. Her commitment to fostering an engaging learning environment for children was unmatched, and her leadership helped countless families navigate their educational journeys. Her passion for education was fueled by the knowledge she gained at the University of Dayton, where she earned her Bachelor's of Science. She also volunteered for many years with the Christ Child Society and Kettering Health Network. Family was at the heart of Mary’s life. She is survived by her two beloved daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Dr. Peter Smith of New Jersey, and Mary Lynne and John Klinge of Illinois. Mary's legacy continues through her six cherished grandchildren—Ryan, Caroline, and Alexandra Smith, along with Cassandra Longo, Jack and William Klinge. Each of them carries a piece of her spirit, enriched by her love and guidance. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Mari Williams-Shumur, whose joyful presence brought light to Mary’s life. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Veda, whose partnership and support were integral to her happiness. She also joins her parents, Michael and Mary (Toth) Katona, who instilled in her the values of hard work, kindness, and compassion that she embodied throughout her life. With an unwavering spirit and a heart full of love, Mary Helen Veda left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. As we reflect on her life, we celebrate her numerous contributions to both her family and community, and we honor the legacy she leaves behind. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, April 24, 2026 at St Leonard’s Chapel. She will then be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christ Child Society of Dayton, P.O. Box 292058, Dayton, Ohio 45429. Westbrock Funeral Home-BIGGER RD handling the arrangements for the family.
