James “Jim” Hellwig passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2026, in Treasure Island, Florida. He was born on May 19, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio.
Jim was a graduate of Colonel White High School, Class of 1970, and went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Mechanics from the University of Findlay. He also served his country as a veteran of the United States Army, with service in Nuremberg, Germany. After returning home, he built a long and steady career as a mechanic for the City of Dayton, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.
He will be remembered as a very quiet man with a generous heart. Jim enjoyed the simple things that brought him happiness. He was an avid fan of UD Football and the Cincinnati Bengals, and he especially loved old cars. He also enjoyed working through sudoku books and was known to have a sweet tooth. His love of animals was evident throughout his life, especially in the special bond he shared with his cat, Squeak.
Above all, Jim will be remembered by those who knew and loved him best. He is survived by his wife, Rita Hellwig; his sister, Paula (Bill) Barrows; and his step-son, Gary Clemens. He also leaves behind his niece Veronica (Geoffrey) Kannan and their son George Kannan, grandchildren Jonathan Clemens, Ashley Davis, William Davis, and Kayla Davis, and great-grandchildren Lauren Clucas and Kylah Wimberly. May their memories of Jim bring comfort and peace in the days ahead.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Hellwig; his mother, Jean Hellwig; his brothers, Ronnie Hellwig and George Hellwig. and step-daughter Lisa Wines.
A visitation will be held on October 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Westbrock Funeral Home, 1712 Wayne Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45410. To honor Jim's military service, we will pause at 6:30 to receive military honors.
