David R. Velte, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 7, 1939, in Middletown, Ohio, David lived a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to those he cherished.
For many years, David served as a State Trooper for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, embodying a career dedicated to public service and safety. He later retired from the Dayton Correction Institute, where he continued to impact the lives of others. His commitment to his work was only matched by his devotion to his family, who were his proudest accomplishments.
David was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country honorably. His myriad interests included golfing, watching NASCAR, and riding motorcycles, pursuits that brought him joy and adventure. A fun-loving jokester by nature, those who knew David will fondly remember his goofy spirit and the laughter he brought into their lives. He had a special bond with his dog, Ottis, and enjoyed traveling, making lasting memories on the water with his two boats.
David's family was his greatest treasure. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy (Hewitt) Velte; his sons, Todd (Melanie) Velte, Jeremy (Nikki) Barnes, and Jason Hewitt; and his daughter, Misty (Justin) Lang. He leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family members who will carry forward his legacy of love and support, never forgetting the way he cheered them on at each event they participated in.
David is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kim Steinmetz; his grandson, Shane Velte; and his brother, George Velte. Their absence leaves a profound void, but David's spirit and the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort and strength for his family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of David at Westbrock Funeral Home, located at 1712 Wayne Avenue, Dayton, OH. Visitation will be held on March 6, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. David will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 (Time to be announced)
As we remember David R. Velte, let us celebrate a life well-lived—a life of service, laughter, and unconditional love. His memory will forever reside in our hearts, reminding us to cherish each moment and the people we hold dear.
